Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp - Manikata, Malta - Abandoned Building with Limestone Colonnade

Manikata Barracks - Image

An abandoned British military camp building at Għajn Tuffieħa near Manikata, Malta, featuring a long limestone colonnade, recessed doorways and overgrown surroundings.

This photograph shows an abandoned building at the former Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp near Manikata, on the northwestern coast of Malta. The most striking architectural feature is a long colonnade of regularly spaced square limestone columns supporting a continuous horizontal roofline. Behind the columns, a shaded veranda runs along the building, with recessed doorways and rectangular openings visible in the weathered façade. The substantial stone pillars incorporate simple decorative bands near their upper and lower sections, adding a restrained classical character to the otherwise functional military architecture. The pale limestone walls display patches of discolouration and deterioration, reflecting the building’s age and prolonged exposure to the elements. In the foreground, broken masonry, exposed rock and overgrown vegetation cover the sloping ground beneath the structure. A tall palm tree stands beside the building, its sweeping fronds contrasting with the straight architectural lines of the colonnade. The combination of formal stonework, Mediterranean vegetation and neglected surroundings creates an atmospheric impression of a once-active military establishment. Although the building may have served an administrative or communal purpose, its exact original function has not been conclusively identified.

The former Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp formed part of the extensive British military infrastructure established in Malta during the twentieth century. Situated near Manikata and the coastal areas of Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa, the camp occupied a large area of countryside and provided accommodation, training facilities and supporting services for British military personnel. Its buildings were distributed across separate sections, commonly referred to as the upper and lower camps, with structures designed to accommodate the practical requirements of a military establishment. The surrounding open countryside and coastal terrain made the location particularly suitable for training exercises, while the relatively isolated setting allowed military activities to take place away from Malta’s principal urban centres. During the period of British rule, Malta held considerable strategic importance as a naval and military base in the central Mediterranean. Military camps such as Għajn Tuffieħa supported the personnel and infrastructure required to maintain this presence. The architecture of the surviving camp buildings reflects the practical construction methods of the period, frequently combining locally available limestone with simple, functional designs. Covered verandas and colonnades were particularly suitable for Malta’s warm climate, providing shaded circulation areas and helping protect entrances from direct sunlight. The building visible in this photograph is an interesting example of this approach, with its substantial limestone columns and extended covered frontage. Following changes in British military requirements and the eventual withdrawal of British forces from Malta, many former military properties were abandoned or adapted for civilian use. Part of the lower camp subsequently became associated with the Ħal Ferħ Holiday Complex, while other buildings retained their original military appearance and gradually deteriorated. Today, surviving structures from the former Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp provide reminders of the British military presence in northwestern Malta and the changing uses of the surrounding landscape. This photograph documents one of the camp’s distinctive architectural features, preserving a visual record of its limestone colonnade and abandoned condition.
