A decorative three-arched limestone arcade at the former Ħal Ferħ Holiday Complex near Manikata, Malta, surrounded by wildflowers, prickly pear cacti and the abandoned accommodation buildings of the former military camp.
This photograph shows a decorative limestone arcade within the former Ħal Ferħ Holiday Complex at Għajn Tuffieħa, near Manikata on the northwestern coast of Malta. Three rounded arches form the central architectural feature, supported by substantial limestone pillars and crowned by an ornamental parapet with small geometric projections. To the right, two spherical stone finials rise above a taller section of masonry, adding a decorative element to the former holiday village. Behind the arcade, rows of flat-roofed limestone buildings extend into the background, reflecting the accommodation layout of the former military establishment. Low boundary walls and additional stone structures partially conceal the entrances and pathways connecting the buildings. In the foreground, wild grasses and small flowering plants have spread across the neglected grounds, while several prickly pear cacti provide a distinctive Mediterranean touch. Mature trees surround the buildings, with dense branches partly obscuring the decorative stonework. The contrast between the pale limestone architecture and the colourful vegetation creates an atmospheric impression of a once-maintained holiday complex gradually being reclaimed by nature. The photograph preserves an interesting architectural detail of the former tourist accommodation, highlighting the ornamental features that distinguished parts of the complex from the more functional military buildings nearby.
The Ħal Ferħ Holiday Complex occupied part of the former lower camp of Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp, commonly associated with Manikata Barracks. The original establishment formed part of the extensive British military infrastructure developed in Malta during the twentieth century. Located near Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa, the camp provided accommodation, training facilities and supporting services for British military personnel stationed on the island. The military complex was distributed across the surrounding countryside in sections generally known as the upper and lower camps, containing residential quarters, administrative buildings, communal facilities and other supporting structures. Following changes in British military requirements and the eventual withdrawal of British forces from Malta, parts of the former military establishment were adapted for civilian use. The lower camp became the Ħal Ferħ Holiday Complex, transforming former military accommodation into a holiday destination situated close to some of Malta’s most scenic beaches. The conversion reflected the growing importance of tourism to the Maltese economy and the wider reuse of former military properties for civilian activities. Buildings within the holiday complex incorporated decorative architectural elements, including arched entrances, ornamental parapets and traditional limestone detailing, creating a more welcoming Mediterranean atmosphere for visitors. The arcade visible in this photograph is an example of this distinctive architectural character, although its precise construction date and relationship to the original military buildings have not been independently established. Over time, the holiday accommodation became increasingly outdated, and redevelopment proposals emerged during the early 2010s to replace the ageing complex with modern, higher-end tourist facilities. As the former buildings fell out of use, vegetation spread across the grounds and many structures began to deteriorate. Photographs taken during this period provide an important historical record of the former holiday village before subsequent changes to the site. This image documents one of the complex’s more decorative architectural features, preserving the appearance of its limestone arcade and surrounding gardens during the final years of the original Ħal Ferħ development.
