Freising - Heilig-Geist-Kirche - Tower Rising into the Blue

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Freising forms part of the historic Heiliggeistspital complex and is one of the distinctive religious buildings of the old town. This photograph captures the church from a steep upward angle, emphasizing the tall, slender tower and pale façade as they rise behind the bare branches of a winter tree into a vivid blue sky. The Heiliggeistspital has medieval origins, but the present complex was rebuilt after the destruction and hardship of the Thirty Years’ War. Construction of the new hospital building began in 1686 and was completed in 1688, while the church in the west wing was consecrated in 1697 by Bishop Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing und Liechteneck. The single-nave church later received important Baroque furnishings, including its high altar from 1697 and side altars dating from around 1720. Today, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche remains closely associated with the historic hospital foundation and adds a distinctive vertical landmark to the architectural character of central Freising.
