The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn cogwheel railway provides one of the most distinctive routes toward Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. In this photograph, the blue-and-white train stands at the station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen before beginning its journey toward the Zugspitzplatt. The line runs through Grainau and then climbs steeply into the mountain, using a rack-and-pinion system on the steeper sections before reaching the high-altitude station on the Zugspitzplatt. Opened in 1930, the railway was an important engineering achievement and remains a popular way for visitors to reach the Zugspitze region. From the Zugspitzplatt, passengers can continue toward the summit by cable car. The train’s functional Alpine design and the dramatic mountain setting make it an integral part of the Zugspitze travel experience.
