Snow Groomers - Zugspitze, Germany - Red PistenBully Machines on the Zugspitzplatt

Zugspitze - Image

Two red PistenBully snow groomers stand on the Zugspitzplatt, ready to prepare and maintain the high-Alpine ski slopes of the Zugspitze.

Two powerful red PistenBully snow groomers stand on the snow-covered Zugspitzplatt beneath the steep rocky slopes of the Zugspitze massif. Their broad tracked undercarriages and large front blades are designed for working across deep snow and preparing the ski slopes in the demanding high-Alpine environment. Often known as snowcats or piste bashers, these specialized vehicles redistribute and level snow before rear-mounted grooming equipment finishes the surface to create a firm and even ski piste. The Zugspitzplatt lies at around 2,600 metres below Germany's highest mountain and forms the heart of the Zugspitze ski area. At this altitude, snow grooming and careful piste maintenance are essential parts of operating the winter sports area. The vivid red machines provide a striking contrast against the brilliant white snow and rugged grey limestone of the surrounding Bavarian Alps.
