Schneefernerkopf - Zugspitze, Germany - Snow-Covered Peak above the Zugspitzplatt

Zugspitze - Image

The snow-covered Schneefernerkopf rises above the Zugspitzplatt, its rocky summit and high-Alpine ski slopes standing beneath a brilliant blue sky.

The Schneefernerkopf rises above the Zugspitzplatt as one of the prominent peaks of the Zugspitze massif in the Wetterstein Mountains. Reaching approximately 2,874 metres, the mountain stands on the border between Bavaria in Germany and Tyrol in Austria and forms part of the dramatic high-Alpine landscape surrounding Germany's highest mountain. In this photograph, broad snowfields climb toward the rugged rocky summit beneath a deep blue sky, while ski infrastructure and marked pistes can be seen crossing the lower slopes. The Zugspitzplatt lies at around 2,600 metres and forms the centre of Germany's highest ski area, with runs extending across the slopes between the Schneefernerkopf, Wetterwandeck and Zugspitze. The combination of exposed limestone, lingering snow and open mountain terrain gives the scene the unmistakable character of the high Bavarian Alps.
