This historic bathing house stands along the shore of Lake Constance at Wasserburg in Bavaria, Germany. Rather than a conventional boathouse, the small wooden structure belongs to a tradition of private lakeside bathing houses that developed around the Bodensee during the late 19th century. The surviving Wasserburg example dates from approximately 1880–1890 and was designed to provide privacy and direct access to the lake. Such bathing houses commonly contained separate changing areas, while a small platform and steps or ladders allowed bathers to enter the water directly. In this photograph, the light-coloured wooden building is raised above the stony shoreline on tall timber supports, with an exterior staircase leading up from the exposed lakebed. The construction reflects both the changing water level of Lake Constance and the practical design of these historic recreational buildings, which today form an unusual and picturesque reminder of earlier bathing culture around the lake.
