Wasserburg Peninsula - Lake Constance, Germany - St. Georg Church from the Ferry Pier

Wasserburg - Image

The historic Wasserburg peninsula and St. Georg Church seen from the ferry pier, with the church tower and red-roofed buildings rising above the waters of Lake Constance.

The historic Wasserburg peninsula on Lake Constance is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Bavarian shore of the Bodensee. Once a true island, it became connected to the mainland after the separating water channel was filled during the period of Fugger rule. Dominating the peninsula is the Catholic parish church of St. Georg, whose tower was completed in 1403 and later rebuilt after lightning damage in 1655. The church, historic buildings and old defensive walls give the peninsula its distinctive silhouette. This photograph was taken from the ferry pier and shows the peninsula across the water, with St. Georg rising prominently above the red-roofed buildings. The pier in the foreground leads the eye toward the historic ensemble and emphasizes Wasserburg’s close relationship with Lake Constance.
