This photograph captures the surviving ruins of Għajn Ħadid Tower, a seventeenth-century coastal watchtower situated in the Selmun area near Mellieħa in northern Malta. The remains of the tower stand prominently on a rocky coastal hillside, illuminated by warm evening sunlight that highlights the golden tones of the weathered limestone. Large, regularly cut stone blocks form the surviving outer walls, while the central section reveals a collapsed mass of smaller stones and rubble where much of the original structure has disappeared. Fallen masonry is scattered around the base, surrounded by low Mediterranean shrubs, grasses and exposed limestone rocks. Behind the ruins, the deep blue Mediterranean Sea meets a clear sky decorated with delicate streaks of high cloud. Għajn Ħadid Tower, historically known as Torre di Salomone, was constructed in 1658 as the first of the De Redin coastal watchtowers commissioned by Grand Master Martin de Redin of the Order of St John. The towers formed part of a coordinated coastal defence system, allowing guards to observe maritime activity and communicate warnings between neighbouring positions. Għajn Ħadid Tower occupied a strategic elevated location overlooking Malta’s northeastern coastline and the approaches towards St Paul’s Bay. The tower suffered extensive damage during the earthquake of 1856, when its upper section reportedly collapsed, leaving the substantial ruins visible today. Although much of the original watchtower has been lost, its surviving limestone walls remain an important reminder of Malta’s coastal defence heritage.
