This photograph presents a sweeping view across the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, with the curved rows of the cavea descending towards the orchestra and the monumental remains of the Roman stage building. Beyond the ancient walls, the landscape opens towards Sicily's Ionian coast, while the broad outline of Mount Etna can be seen through the summer haze in the distance. The theatre's original layout dates to the 3rd–2nd century BC, although the impressive structure visible today largely reflects extensive Roman reconstruction during the first half of the 2nd century AD. Its cavea measures approximately 109 metres in diameter and is divided into nine sectors, making Taormina's theatre one of the largest ancient theatres in Sicily. During the Roman period the orchestra was later adapted into an arena for spectacles. The surviving openings in the stage building now frame the surrounding landscape, creating the celebrated combination of archaeology, coastline and Mount Etna for which the Teatro Antico di Taormina is renowned.
