The surviving Roman stage of Taormina's Ancient Theatre, with modern performance seating and the Ionian coastline stretching into the distance.
This photograph looks across the stage area of the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, where the weathered brickwork, arches and surviving columns of the Roman stage building stand above a modern performance platform. Rows of temporary chairs and technical equipment in the orchestra demonstrate how the ancient monument continues to serve as a spectacular venue for contemporary cultural events. Beyond the ruined stage, the view opens towards the Ionian Sea and the coastline below Taormina. The theatre originated during the Hellenistic period in the 3rd–2nd century BC, although most of the structure visible today belongs to extensive Roman rebuilding undertaken particularly during the first half of the 2nd century AD. The stage façade retains its two lateral openings, while its original central opening has been lost. Several columns now standing within the stage structure were repositioned during restoration work in the 19th century. The combination of ancient architecture, modern performance space and expansive coastal scenery makes the Teatro Antico one of Taormina's most distinctive landmarks.
