Ancient Theatre - Taormina, Sicily - View Towards Castel Tauro and Castelmola

This photograph looks beyond the upper remains of Taormina's Ancient Theatre towards the rugged mountains rising immediately behind the historic town. Weathered brick and stone structures belonging to the theatre occupy the foreground, while Mediterranean trees and exposed limestone cliffs lead the eye towards the dramatic hilltop landscape. High on Monte Tauro to the left stands Castel Tauro, also traditionally known as the Saracen Castle, occupying a strategic site associated with Taormina's ancient acropolis. Farther beyond, the buildings of Castelmola cluster spectacularly along an even higher ridge. The Ancient Theatre itself was established during the Hellenistic period in the 3rd–2nd century BC and was extensively reconstructed during Roman rule, particularly in the first half of the 2nd century AD. Its elevated position is an essential part of the monument's character, connecting the archaeological site visually with the surrounding Sicilian landscape. This view illustrates particularly well the steep terrain linking Taormina, Monte Tauro and the mountain village of Castelmola.
