Taormina - Greek Theatre - 06

The construction of the amphitheater started probably by the Greeks around the third century BC, at the time of Hiero II. Over 100,000 cubic meters of rock needed to be manually removed to allow construction. On completing the theater was to accommodate dramatic performances or musical. During the Roman period it was renovated and expanded to make room for games and gladiatorial battles. In our days it is open to the public and also used to house opera, musicals and other events.
