Ancient Theatre - Taormina, Sicily - Cavea Beneath Castel Tauro

This photograph looks steeply down into the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, where the curved rows of the cavea descend towards the orchestra and modern performance stage. Ancient brick walls frame the view, while the surviving Roman stage architecture, stone seating and temporary chairs reveal the theatre's continuing use as a cultural venue. Rising dramatically beyond the monument is Monte Tauro, crowned by Castel Tauro, the historic Castle of Taormina. The castle stands approximately 396 metres above sea level on the site traditionally associated with the ancient Greek acropolis. Below it, the theatre occupies another commanding ridge overlooking the surrounding landscape. Its original layout dates to the 3rd–2nd century BC, although the structure visible today largely belongs to extensive Roman reconstruction, particularly during the first half of the 2nd century AD. With a cavea approximately 109 metres in diameter, the theatre is among the largest surviving ancient theatres in Sicily.
