Taormina - Sicily, Italy - Historic Town Beneath Monte Tauro and Mount Etna

This photograph presents a panoramic view across Taormina, with the densely built historic town spreading over the steep Sicilian hillside amid cypress trees, palms and lush Mediterranean vegetation. Terracotta roofs and colourful façades fill the centre of the scene, while rugged Monte Tauro rises sharply to the right and the enormous silhouette of Mount Etna emerges through the atmospheric haze on the distant left. Taormina occupies a remarkable position between the Ionian coast and the mountains of eastern Sicily, creating dramatic changes in elevation within a relatively small area. Above the town, Monte Tauro reaches 396 metres and is crowned by Castel Tauro, the historic castle occupying the site associated with the ancient Greek acropolis. Higher still lies the hilltop village of Castelmola. The photograph was taken from the area of Taormina’s Ancient Theatre, whose commanding ridge provides exceptional views over the town and surrounding landscape. The combination of historic architecture, Mediterranean vegetation and volcanic mountains illustrates the extraordinary geographical setting that has helped make Taormina one of Sicily’s most celebrated destinations.
