A monumental opening in the Roman stage façade of Taormina’s Ancient Theatre frames the distant Ionian coastline.
This photograph focuses on the monumental Roman stage façade of Taormina’s Ancient Theatre, where weathered brickwork, stone columns and a great arched opening reveal the impressive scale of the surviving structure. Through the opening, the landscape drops towards the blue Ionian Sea and the distant Sicilian coastline, transforming the ancient architecture into a dramatic natural frame. The theatre originated during the Hellenistic period in the 3rd–2nd century BC, but the remains visible today largely reflect extensive Roman reconstruction undertaken during the first half of the 2nd century AD. The stage façade originally incorporated three principal openings, flanked by niches and architectural decoration. Its two lateral openings survive, while the central opening has collapsed over the centuries. Several columns visible around the stage were repositioned during 19th-century restoration work by architect Francesco Saverio Cavallari. The combination of monumental Roman masonry and expansive coastal scenery has become one of the defining characteristics of Taormina’s extraordinary ancient theatre.
