A historic church rises above a steep staircase in Noto, its weathered Baroque doorway and warm limestone façade standing against the Sicilian sky.
A historic church rises above a steep stone staircase in Noto, with an ornate Baroque doorway opening onto an elevated terrace high above the adjoining street. The warm, weathered stone façade, decorative pediment and sweeping iron railings create an atmospheric glimpse of the architecture encountered while exploring the upper streets of this remarkable Sicilian town. Noto was almost entirely rebuilt on a new site following the devastating earthquake of 1693, producing a carefully planned city filled with churches, convents, palaces and houses constructed predominantly during the 18th century. The sloping terrain also contributes strongly to its character, with staircases and terraces connecting buildings positioned at different levels above the principal streets. Local limestone gives much of Noto its characteristic honey-coloured appearance, becoming especially warm under the Sicilian sun. Together with seven other towns of south-eastern Sicily, Noto forms part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002 as an exceptional example of Late Baroque architecture and post-earthquake urban reconstruction.
