The Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata rises above its sweeping stone staircase in Noto, its warm Baroque façade framed by a deep blue Sicilian sky.
The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi all'Immacolata rises dramatically above a broad stone staircase along Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the historic centre of Noto. Seen from below, its warm limestone façade, sculpted Baroque entrance and elevated position create one of the characteristic architectural perspectives of this celebrated Sicilian city. The church was constructed during Noto's rebuilding following the catastrophic earthquake of 1693, with work taking place between 1704 and the middle of the 18th century to designs by Rosario Gagliardi and Vincenzo Sinatra. Its façade is arranged in two orders of Corinthian pilasters and crowned by a triangular pediment, while the richly decorated central portal is accompanied by niches and finely carved stone ornamentation. The impressive three-flight staircase further emphasizes the height and theatrical character of the building. Together with the adjoining former Franciscan convent, San Francesco all'Immacolata forms an important part of Noto's remarkable Late Baroque townscape and the architectural heritage of the Val di Noto.
