The ornate Baroque façade of the Church of San Domenico rising behind greenery and flowering plants in Noto, Sicily.
This photograph shows the Church of San Domenico in Noto, Sicily, framed by lush greenery, flowering shrubs and a tall tree beneath a vivid blue sky. The warm golden tones of the church's elaborate Baroque façade contrast beautifully with the vegetation in the foreground, giving the scene the character of a peaceful garden view within Noto's historic centre. Standing on Piazza XVI Maggio, San Domenico is one of the city's notable examples of late Sicilian Baroque architecture. Designed by architect Rosario Gagliardi between 1703 and 1727 as a convent church for the Dominican Fathers, the building is distinguished by its strongly convex central façade and richly modelled architectural details. The façade is arranged in two principal orders, Doric below and Ionic above, creating a dynamic play of curves, columns, shadows and decorative stonework. San Domenico forms part of the remarkable Baroque townscape created when Noto was rebuilt following the devastating 1693 earthquake that transformed much of southeastern Sicily.
