Looking upward at the richly sculpted Baroque façade of the Church of San Carlo Borromeo along Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Noto, Sicily.
This photograph presents a close, upward-looking view of the Church of San Carlo Borromeo in Noto, Sicily, emphasizing the dramatic curves and vertical proportions of its richly sculpted Baroque façade. The central entrance, projecting columns, ornamental cornices, window and upper architectural levels reveal the warm golden stone and elaborate detailing characteristic of Noto's historic centre. Also known as San Carlo al Corso or the Church of the Jesuit College, the church stands along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and was built from 1730 for the Jesuit order. Its design is attributed to Rosario Gagliardi, one of the leading architects involved in the remarkable Baroque reconstruction of southeastern Sicily following the devastating 1693 earthquake. The façade rises through three architectural orders, progressing from Doric capitals on the lower level through Ionic to Corinthian above. Its interplay of concave and convex forms, free-standing columns, moulded cornices and sculptural decoration creates the strong sense of movement associated with Noto's distinctive late Sicilian Baroque architecture.
