Looking up the broad stone staircase towards the Church of Montevergini at the head of Via Nicolaci in Noto, Sicily.
This photograph looks upward along the broad stone staircase leading to the Church of Montevergini in Noto, Sicily, with the pale Baroque façade rising against a bright blue and cloud-filled sky. Historic buildings closely frame the steps on either side, including part of Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata to the left, creating the enclosed and theatrical urban perspective characteristic of Via Nicolaci. The Church of Montevergini stands at the upper end of this famous street and was designed by Sicilian architect Vincenzo Sinatra. Construction of its main structure and façade began in 1747, and the church was consecrated in 1762. Its architecture is particularly noted for the gently concave central façade, originally framed by two bell towers, which creates a dramatic visual conclusion when viewed from lower Via Nicolaci. The staircase further emphasizes the church's vertical presence within the streetscape. Inside, the single-nave church preserves an 18th-century majolica floor, paintings attributed to Costantino Carasi and an elaborate Baroque high altar decorated with polychrome marble.
