A small stone fountain in front of the Church and former Monastery of Montevergini at the upper end of Via Nicolaci in Noto, Sicily.
This photograph captures the upper end of Via Nicolaci in Noto, Sicily, with a circular stone fountain occupying the foreground and the historic Montevergini complex rising behind it. The pale limestone façade of the Church of Montevergini appears to the left, while the long former monastery building stretches across the centre of the scene, its balconies, arched ground-floor openings and warm stonework contributing to the distinctive character of Noto's historic centre. The Church of Montevergini provides the dramatic architectural conclusion to Via Nicolaci, one of the city's best-known Baroque streets and the setting for Noto's annual Infiorata flower festival. Designed by Vincenzo Sinatra during the 18th century, the church is particularly distinguished by its gently concave façade, originally framed by two bell towers. Via Nicolaci is also renowned for Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata and its exuberantly sculpted balconies. Together, these buildings form part of the remarkable late Baroque urban landscape created during Noto's reconstruction following the devastating earthquake of 1693.
