An elegant historic residence with blue-green shutters, wrought-iron balconies and decorative stonework in the Baroque centre of Noto, Sicily.
This photograph shows an elegant historic residence in the centre of Noto, Sicily, viewed from a street corner beside a steeply rising paved lane. The building is distinguished by its blue-green wooden shutters, projecting wrought-iron balconies, decorative window surrounds and contrasting stonework on the lower façade, while flowering plants add splashes of colour to several balconies. The sloping side street and tightly grouped historic buildings illustrate how Noto's monumental architecture is integrated into a lively network of smaller streets and residential spaces. Much of the present city was constructed after the catastrophic earthquake of 1693 destroyed the earlier settlement of Noto Antica. The new town became one of the outstanding examples of late Baroque urban planning and architecture in southeastern Sicily, using the area's warm-coloured limestone to create a remarkably harmonious streetscape. Although Noto is celebrated for monumental landmarks such as its cathedral, churches and aristocratic palaces, residential buildings like this one contribute equally to the architectural character and atmosphere of its historic centre.
