Neuravensburg - Burg Neuravensburg - Lone Keep above the Spring Meadow

Neuravensburg - The castle - Image

The surviving keep of Burg Neuravensburg rises above a grassy hillside dotted with spring flowers, seen from partway up the old castle hill.

The surviving keep of Burg Neuravensburg stands high above the village of Neuravensburg near Wangen im Allgäu and is the most prominent remnant of the former castle complex. In this photograph, the weathered stone tower rises alone above a green hillside scattered with small yellow spring flowers, while bare and budding trees frame the ruin against a cloudy sky. The original castle was probably founded during the first half of the 12th century and later became the centre of the historic lordship of Neuravensburg. From 1613 onward, the medieval fortification was transformed into a more representative palace, with the keep incorporated into the new complex. After the estate passed into Württemberg ownership, most of the palace buildings were released for demolition from 1837 and had disappeared by the middle of the 19th century. The massive keep survived and later underwent several preservation campaigns, becoming both a historic monument and a viewpoint over the surrounding Allgäu landscape.
