Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu is a historic Renaissance residence of the House of Waldburg-Zeil, set prominently on the Zeiler ridge above the surrounding countryside. This photograph focuses on a less familiar side of the complex, where a long rendered wing with shuttered windows leads toward a round tower with a steep red-tiled roof, while the ground falls away toward dense woodland beyond. The present Schloss Zeil developed from the end of the sixteenth century, after an earlier medieval castle west of the current residence was demolished. Construction of the new palace began in 1599 under Froben von Waldburg-Zeil, and the complex was subsequently enlarged and altered over the following centuries. The wider ensemble also includes former collegiate and ecclesiastical buildings, contributing to the varied architectural character visible around the site today. From formal gateways and courtyards to quieter side elevations such as this one, Schloss Zeil preserves the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence shaped over several centuries.
