The decorated gatehouse of Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu, viewed across a quiet green courtyard and framed by mature trees.

Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu is a historic Renaissance residence of the House of Waldburg-Zeil, set on a prominent ridge above the surrounding Allgäu landscape. This photograph shows the palace gatehouse from across a broad green courtyard, with mature trees and shrubs framing the view and drawing attention toward the richly decorated arched entrance. The site was occupied by an earlier medieval castle, while the present palace complex began to take shape in 1599 after the older fortress was demolished. The lordship of Zeil had already come into the possession of Truchsess Johann von Waldburg in 1337, establishing the long connection between the estate and the Waldburg family. The Renaissance palace developed as a four-wing complex with square corner towers and was later enlarged and modified, particularly during the eighteenth century. Despite these changes, Schloss Zeil has preserved a remarkably coherent historic character, and its gatehouses, courtyards and residential buildings still convey the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence shaped over several centuries.
