The inner courtyard of Neuschwanstein Castle reveals ornate gables, arched windows and Romanesque Revival details in pale Bavarian stone.
Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century palace on a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castle was begun in 1869 as a romantic retreat and a tribute to medieval legend, kingship and the artistic world associated with Richard Wagner. This courtyard view shows the richly decorated inner façades, carved balconies, arched galleries and stairways that give the palace its theatrical fairy-tale character.
