A dramatic upward view of Neuschwanstein Castle, showing its tall stone tower, arched windows and pale Romanesque Revival walls above the wooded slope.
Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century palace on a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it was begun in 1869 as a romantic monument to medieval culture, kingship and the legends that inspired the works of Richard Wagner. This low-angle view highlights the castle’s soaring tower, pale stone façade and dramatic position above the forested hillside.
