This photograph captures a silver Lancia Fulvia Coupé carrying race number 18 as it negotiates a tight corner during the Mdina Grand Prix in Malta. The compact two-door body, low roofline and purposeful stance reflect the sporting character that helped make the Fulvia one of Lancia’s best-known cars of the 1960s and 1970s. Introduced in 1963, the Fulvia Coupé combined elegant Italian styling with sophisticated engineering, including front-wheel drive and Lancia’s distinctive narrow-angle V4 engine. Competition versions of the Fulvia achieved considerable international rally success, culminating in Lancia winning the 1972 International Championship for Manufacturers. The Mdina Grand Prix forms part of the Malta Classic and brings historic racing and sports cars onto closed public roads outside the fortified city of Mdina. Its challenging circuit incorporates tight bends, sweeping curves and changes in elevation, providing an ideal setting in which to see classic automobiles such as the Fulvia being driven competitively rather than simply displayed as museum pieces.
