This photograph captures a bright red MG Midget carrying race number 19 as it races through a tight bend during the Mdina Grand Prix in Malta. Its compact body, contrasting silver competition hardtop, flared stance and small alloy wheels give the lightweight British sports car a purposeful racing appearance. Introduced in 1961, the MG Midget was conceived as an affordable two-seat sports car and became one of the familiar small British roadsters of the 1960s and 1970s. Closely related to the Austin-Healey Sprite, the Midget evolved through several generations while retaining its compact dimensions and traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Its low weight and responsive handling also made the model well suited to club motorsport and historic competition. At the Mdina Grand Prix, classic cars compete on closed roads outside Malta’s ancient fortified capital, where tight corners, sweeping curves and changes in elevation provide a challenging circuit. The photograph captures the Midget in precisely the environment where its small size and agile handling can be appreciated.
