This photograph captures a competition-prepared Austin Mini carrying race number 34 as it corners during the Mdina Grand Prix in Malta. The compact body, small wheels and unmistakable upright profile of the classic Mini are complemented by racing modifications including a roll cage, competition equipment and numerous sponsor decals. The Mini was introduced in 1959 and became one of the most influential small cars of the 20th century. Designed by Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Corporation, its transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout allowed an exceptionally large proportion of the car’s compact dimensions to be devoted to passengers and luggage. The Mini also developed an impressive motorsport reputation, with competition versions becoming particularly successful in rallying and touring-car racing during the 1960s. Its small size, light weight and agile handling remain ideally suited to the tight and twisting character of historic racing. At the Mdina Grand Prix, these qualities are put to good use on a challenging closed-road circuit outside Malta’s ancient fortified capital.
