Evening settles over Corso Umberto I near the Church of San Pietro in Modica Bassa, where glowing streetlights and colourful decorations illuminate the historic center beneath a darkening Sicilian sky. A tall palm rises above the busy street, while old palazzi, pedestrians and evening traffic capture the everyday atmosphere surrounding one of Modica's most important Baroque landmarks. Corso Umberto I forms the principal historic axis through the lower town and is lined with churches, noble residences and richly decorated façades. Among its outstanding monuments is the Church of San Pietro, recognizable for its monumental staircase lined with statues of the Twelve Apostles. Much of Modica's celebrated architectural character developed during the reconstruction that followed the devastating earthquake of 1693, when churches and palaces throughout the city were rebuilt in the elaborate late-Baroque style. As daylight fades and the lamps come on, the warm stone architecture and narrow streets take on a different character, making an evening walk through Modica Bassa an atmospheric way to experience the historic Sicilian town.
