The ornate Baroque façade of the Church of San Pietro glows in the evening light, framed by a tall palm in the historic heart of Modica Bassa.
The magnificent Baroque façade of the Church of San Pietro rises above Corso Umberto I in Modica Bassa, its warm stone glowing softly in the fading evening light. Framed by a tall palm and the statues lining its elevated forecourt, the richly sculpted church creates one of the characteristic architectural scenes of historic Modica. San Pietro is one of the principal churches of the lower town and is particularly recognizable for its monumental staircase, which is decorated with statues representing the Twelve Apostles. Modica was devastated by the great earthquake of 1693, after which churches and noble palaces throughout the city were extensively rebuilt in the elaborate late-Baroque style characteristic of southeastern Sicily. Sculpted stonework, dramatic façades, monumental stairways and the warm tones of the local stone became defining elements of the reconstructed city. Modica is one of the eight Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2002, celebrating the exceptional architectural and urban rebuilding of southeastern Sicily after the earthquake.
