The illuminated Duomo di San Pietro rises above its monumental staircase at dusk, with the statues of the Twelve Apostles leading toward its richly decorated façade.
The Duomo di San Pietro rises dramatically above its monumental staircase in Modica Bassa, its warm Baroque stonework illuminated against the deepening evening sky. Statues of the Twelve Apostles line the steps leading from Corso Umberto I toward the church, creating a ceremonial approach to one of Modica's most important historic monuments. A church dedicated to Saint Peter existed on this site centuries before the devastating earthquake of 1693, but the disaster caused extensive damage and led to a major reconstruction beginning in 1697. The present façade reflects this long period of rebuilding and decoration, with three entrance portals on the lower level, an elaborately framed central window, sculpted figures and a relief of Christ in triumph crowning the upper section. The external staircase developed through several alterations and reached its present arrangement in 1876. San Pietro forms part of the extraordinary architectural heritage of Modica and the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.
