Patuxay - Vientiane, Laos - Ornate Decorations Beneath the Victory Gate

Patuxay, meaning Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph, was constructed between 1957 and 1968 as a memorial associated with the Lao struggle for independence from France. Although its monumental form was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, its decoration incorporates distinctly Lao architectural and artistic traditions. These include representations of mythological figures such as the Kinnaly, a bird-woman found in Lao Buddhist tradition. Standing prominently on Lane Xang Avenue, Patuxay has become one of Vientiane’s best-known landmarks and offers panoramic views across the Lao capital from its upper levels.
