An ornate arched passage through Patuxay in Vientiane, decorated with intricate reliefs and traditional Lao architectural motifs.
This photograph shows one of the monumental arched passages through Patuxay in Vientiane, Laos. Tall decorative columns frame the opening, while an elaborate pointed panel above the arch displays sculpted mythological ornament surrounded by intricate floral and geometric reliefs. Through the shaded passage, sunlight and greenery provide a glimpse towards Patuxay Park beyond. Patuxay, meaning Gate of Triumph, was constructed between 1957 and 1968 as a memorial associated with the Lao struggle for independence from France. Although the monument’s overall concept was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, its architecture incorporates distinctly Lao decorative traditions. Mythological figures, including the Kinnaly or bird-woman, appear among the ornamental motifs used throughout the structure. Patuxay stands prominently on Lane Xang Avenue and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Lao capital. Its richly decorated arches demonstrate particularly well how European monumental influences were combined with traditional Lao artistic forms.
