The abandoned Royal Naval Military Chapel at the former Għajn Tuffieħa Training Camp, its small bell tower rising above the surrounding vegetation.
This photograph shows the former Royal Naval Military Chapel at Għajn Tuffieħa, Malta, standing quietly among dense vegetation in the grounds of the former British military training camp. Warm evening sunlight illuminates the simple limestone building and its distinctive square bell tower, while an old tree and overgrown countryside emphasize the isolated character of the abandoned structure. The chapel was built in 1949 for British forces stationed at Għajn Tuffieħa and was also used as a cinema during its military history. The wider training camp had much earlier origins, having been established around the beginning of the 20th century as a Royal Marines training centre under Admiralty control. During the First World War, Għajn Tuffieħa was also developed as a large convalescent camp for wounded and recovering servicemen. Military training continued in the area for decades, with British and NATO forces using the camp into the 1960s. The surviving chapel is therefore an evocative reminder of an important but easily overlooked chapter of Malta’s British military heritage.
