The elegant twin-towered façade of Our Lady of Pompeii Parish Church overlooking the historic centre of Marsaxlokk, Malta.
This photograph shows the imposing façade of Our Lady of Pompeii Parish Church in Marsaxlokk, Malta. Built from the warm limestone characteristic of the Maltese Islands, the symmetrical church front is framed by two bell towers and crowned by a statue above the central section. A large arched recess emphasizes the main entrance, while pilasters, decorative panels and restrained sculptural details give the façade its distinctive appearance. During the 19th century Marsaxlokk developed not only as an important fishing village but also as a popular summer destination. A new church was built in the 1890s to serve the growing community and was initially associated with Our Lady of the Rosary. Marsaxlokk became a separate parish in 1897, and the church subsequently became closely associated with devotion to Our Lady of Pompeii. It was formally dedicated on 17 September 1962. Standing close to the waterfront and the village’s famous fishing harbour, the parish church remains one of the principal architectural and religious landmarks of Marsaxlokk.
