The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dominates the historic Mellieħa skyline, dramatically illuminated beneath a dark Maltese sky.
This photograph captures the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary overlooking Mellieħa, Malta. Warm sunlight illuminates the church’s limestone façade, twin bell towers and distinctive red dome, while the densely packed buildings of the old town climb the ridge behind it beneath a dramatic dark sky. The elevated setting makes the church one of the most recognizable landmarks in northern Malta. Mellieħa regained its status as a parish in 1844, and increasing population eventually created the need for a larger church than the historic nearby sanctuary could provide. Construction of the present parish church took place during the late 19th century, with its first stone blessed on 5 September 1883 and the church itself blessed in 1897. Further work continued after the original building was completed, with the bell towers and dome added during the first half of the 20th century. Dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the church remains at the heart of Mellieħa’s religious life and its celebrated September festa.
