This photograph shows the small Chapel of St Nicholas of Bari at Tas-Subriċint in the Marsaskala area of Malta. Warm sunlight falls across its simple limestone façade and massive side wall, while a small lantern rises above the roof against the deep blue Mediterranean sky. Traditional rubble walls and the open rural surroundings emphasize the chapel’s secluded character and distinguish it from the much larger churches found in Malta’s towns and villages. The site has a long association with devotion to St Nicholas of Bari, with earlier chapels dedicated to the saint recorded in the area before the present building was constructed. These older structures had deteriorated considerably by the 17th century and were eventually closed. The surviving chapel is traditionally dated to 1759, when a new building was erected to continue the dedication to St Nicholas. Its restrained architecture, modest scale and isolated countryside setting make the chapel an attractive example of Malta’s numerous small rural places of worship and an important reminder of the island’s deeply rooted local religious traditions.
