The imposing Neo-Classical façade of the Parish Church of St Joseph in Kalkara, built after the destruction of the village’s former church during World War II.

This photograph presents a frontal view of the Parish Church of St Joseph in Kalkara, Malta. Its imposing limestone façade is dominated by tall classical columns framing the main entrance, while a balustraded terrace separates the lower level from the distinctive recessed loggia and triangular pediment above. Ornamental street lamps and the broad flight of steps complete the symmetrical approach to the church. The present building arose from the devastation suffered by Kalkara during World War II, when the former parish church was destroyed by bombing. A temporary place of worship was established in 1944 while plans were prepared for a permanent replacement on a new site. Designed by Vincenzo Bonello with assistance from Joseph D’Amato, the new church adopted a dignified Neo-Classical architectural style. Its foundation stone was blessed on 13 October 1946, beginning a construction project that lasted almost six years. The completed church was blessed by Archbishop Michael Gonzi on 7 September 1952 and remains the principal parish church and an important landmark of Kalkara today.
