The abandoned Royal Naval Military Chapel at Għajn Tuffieħa, showing its simple bell tower and the long building that also served British forces as a cinema.
This photograph shows the abandoned Royal Naval Military Chapel at Għajn Tuffieħa in northern Malta. Viewed from the side, the simple limestone building reveals its long rectangular form, tall narrow windows and small open belfry rising above the roof, while dense vegetation has gradually reclaimed the surrounding grounds. The chapel was built in 1949 for British naval personnel stationed at the military facilities near Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay. A surviving plaque on the building records the year of its construction. In addition to its original religious function as an Anglican place of worship, the building was also used as a cinema for servicemen, reflecting the recreational facilities provided within British military camps in Malta. Għajn Tuffieħa itself had a much longer military history, serving as a major convalescent camp during the First World War and later returning to use as a training centre for British and NATO forces. Today the abandoned chapel remains an evocative survivor of Malta’s extensive British military heritage.
