Colourful festa lights outline the façade, twin bell towers and red dome of Mellieħa Parish Church during the annual celebration of the Nativity of Our Lady.
This photograph captures the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mellieħa brilliantly illuminated during the village’s annual festa. Hundreds of colourful lights trace the architectural lines of the façade and twin bell towers, while the church’s distinctive red dome glows brightly against the black night sky. Viewed from below, the illuminated towers appear particularly imposing and create one of the most characteristic nighttime scenes of the Mellieħa celebrations. The parish church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a feast celebrated in Mellieħa on 8 September and closely associated with the devotion to Marija Bambina. The same date is also Victory Day in Malta, commemorating important events in the islands’ history and giving the celebration both religious and national significance. Elaborate church illuminations form an important part of Malta’s traditional festas, together with religious processions, marching bands, street decorations and fireworks. During the September festa, the illuminated church becomes a spectacular focal point for the community and one of Mellieħa’s most memorable sights after dark.
