Ta’ Pinu Basilica - Għarb, Gozo - Decorated Columns Framing the Altar

This photograph presents a detailed view of the altar area inside Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb on the island of Gozo. Two richly ornamented columns dominate the foreground, their dark surfaces decorated with intricate golden motifs, while suspended sanctuary lamps, pale carved limestone and colourful religious artwork create an elaborate setting around the altar. Red poinsettias add vivid touches of colour to the otherwise warm and subdued interior. Ta’ Pinu is Malta’s national Marian shrine and developed around a much older rural chapel that became an important place of pilgrimage following the events of 1883, when Karmni Grima reported hearing the voice of the Blessed Virgin calling her from the chapel. The present Romanesque-style sanctuary was begun in 1920 to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims and was blessed and opened in 1932. Religious art forms an important part of its interior, including mosaics based on works by notable Maltese artists. The historic chapel and its revered image of the Assumption were preserved within the sanctuary, maintaining a direct connection between the modern basilica and the centuries-old origins of devotion at Ta’ Pinu.
