Ta’ Pinu Basilica - Għarb, Gozo - Sanctuary Lamps Above the Altar

Ta Pinu Cathedral - Image

Ornate hanging sanctuary lamps and richly decorated columns frame the altar within the luminous limestone interior of Ta’ Pinu Basilica in Gozo.

This photograph presents a vertical view towards the altar inside Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb on the island of Gozo. A series of ornate sanctuary lamps hangs above the altar, while two dark columns covered with intricate golden decoration frame the pale limestone architecture beyond. Religious artwork, carved arches and red poinsettias add further colour and detail to the softly illuminated interior. Ta’ Pinu developed around an ancient rural chapel that was already documented during the 16th century. In 1611 Pinu Gauci provided funds for its restoration, and the chapel eventually became known by his name. Its importance as a place of pilgrimage increased dramatically after 22 June 1883, when Karmni Grima reported hearing the voice of the Blessed Virgin calling her from within the chapel. Growing devotion to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu eventually required a much larger sanctuary. Construction of the present Romanesque-style church began in 1920, with the historic chapel preserved as part of the new complex. The sanctuary was blessed and opened in 1932 and was elevated to the dignity of a Minor Basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1935.
