Ta’ Pinu Basilica - Għarb, Gozo - Bell Tower Rising Above the Trees

This photograph presents an upward view of the bell tower of Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb on the island of Gozo. Partly framed by mature trees and the adjoining limestone walls of the sanctuary, the tower rises dramatically against the deep blue sky, revealing its clock face, rows of finely carved architectural details and slender pinnacle. The National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu developed around a much older rural chapel whose documented history extends back several centuries. In 1611 Pinu Gauci undertook its restoration, an association from which the name Ta’ Pinu developed. The shrine became an important destination for pilgrims following events in 1883, when Karmela Grima reported hearing a woman’s voice calling her from the chapel. Growing devotion eventually prompted construction of the present sanctuary, designed by Maltese architect Andrea Vassallo in a Neo-Lombard Romanesque style. Building began in 1920, with the new church blessed and opened in 1932. Its richly detailed limestone architecture and prominent bell tower have since become distinctive features of the rural Gozitan landscape.
