The symmetrical façade of Mellieħa Parish Church at dusk, with warm lights illuminating the entrance beneath the twin bell towers and evening sky.
This photograph presents the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mellieħa, Malta, viewed directly from the square during the early evening. Warm street lamps illuminate the lower limestone façade and three entrance doors, while the twin bell towers rise symmetrically against a softly clouded blue sky. Between the towers, statues and the central architectural decoration create the characteristic silhouette of one of Mellieħa’s most prominent landmarks. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, locally celebrated as Marija Bambina. Construction of the present church began during the 1880s, with the first stone blessed on 5 September 1883. The church was blessed by Bishop Pietro Pace on 5 September 1897, although further architectural work continued during the following decades. The bell towers and dome were added between 1920 and 1940, and the church was solemnly consecrated on 18 February 1930. Standing prominently above Mellieħa, the parish church remains the focal point of the village and its annual September festa.
