Mellieħa Parish Church covered in colourful festa lights, with its illuminated twin bell towers glowing against the dark night sky.
This photograph captures the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mellieħa at night during the village festa. Hundreds of colourful lights trace the architectural lines of the limestone façade, drawing attention to the columns, windows and decorative stonework, while the brightly illuminated twin bell towers rise dramatically against the black night sky. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, locally celebrated as Marija Bambina, whose feast reaches its climax in Mellieħa on 8 September. Construction of the present parish church took place between 1881 and 1898, with the first stone laid in 1883 and the church inaugurated in 1897. Further work continued during the following decades, including the construction of the two bell towers. During the annual festa, elaborate decorative lighting transforms the church and surrounding square, forming part of a wider celebration that traditionally includes religious ceremonies, processions, band marches and fireworks. The illuminated façade seen here reflects the strong visual character of Malta’s traditional village festas.
