The imposing façade of the Mosta Rotunda, with its classical columned portico, twin bell towers and vast dome illuminated by the Maltese sun.
This photograph presents the monumental façade of the Mosta Rotunda in Mosta, Malta, dominated by its vast dome and imposing classical portico. Six tall columns support the triangular pediment, while matching bell towers frame the composition and the enormous circular drum and dome rise prominently behind them. Decorative stone carving and the warm colour of the Maltese limestone become particularly striking in the strong sunlight against the deep blue sky. Formally known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Rotunda was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, who drew considerable inspiration from the Pantheon in Rome. Construction began in 1833 around the existing parish church, allowing the community to continue worshipping while the much larger building gradually took shape. The Rotunda is also closely associated with the events of 9 April 1942, when an aerial bomb penetrated the dome during an evening service but failed to explode. The congregation survived, and the event became an enduring part of the history and identity of Mosta’s remarkable parish church.
