A close view of a bell tower of the Mosta Rotunda, revealing the arched belfry, bronze bell and elaborate architectural details carved into the Maltese limestone.
This photograph provides a close architectural view of one of the twin bell towers of the Mosta Rotunda in Mosta, Malta. The large bronze bell can be seen within the deeply recessed arched belfry, framed by substantial pilasters and layers of projecting cornices. Elaborately carved stone details decorate the upper sections of the tower, their warm Maltese limestone standing out sharply against the clear blue sky. Formally known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Rotunda was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé and is one of Malta’s most distinctive nineteenth-century churches. Construction of the present building began in 1833 around the earlier parish church, allowing religious services to continue while the enormous new structure was being erected. Although the Rotunda is best known for its vast dome, its monumental bell towers, classical portico and extensive carved stone decoration form an essential part of the overall design. Seen at close range, the craftsmanship of the belfry illustrates the remarkable architectural detail that can easily be overlooked when viewing the immense church as a whole.
