This photograph looks upward along the monumental classical portico of the Mosta Rotunda in Mosta, Malta. A row of towering limestone columns dominates the composition, their carefully carved Ionic capitals supporting the richly detailed entablature and triangular pediment above. Strong sunlight emphasizes the warm colour and texture of the Maltese limestone, while part of one of the church’s twin bell towers rises behind the façade against the deep blue sky. Formally known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Rotunda was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé. Its monumental classical design was strongly influenced by the Pantheon in Rome, particularly in the combination of a vast circular domed church with an imposing columned entrance. Construction began in 1833 around the existing parish church and continued for several decades. Although the enormous unsupported dome is the Rotunda’s most famous architectural feature, this close view demonstrates the scale and craftsmanship of its portico, where classical proportions and finely carved Maltese stone contribute greatly to the imposing character of the building.
